Typical IITian?

I was talking with a friend recently and these questions just popped up.

Is there something like a Typical IITian?

If there is, then who exactly is a Typical IITian?

What are the characterstics of such a person?

Let me clarify right in the beginning that JEE is not something that can be counted as a common characterstic. On similar lines, living in IIT and such superficial things are out.

What I am really interested is, in finding out whether there is a concept of Typical IITian, to which a large majority of IITians would confirm?

Personally, I find it hard to define such a thing because we IITians can be quite a difficult study.

On one hand, you have strong individualistic guys and on the other hand, there are the herd mentality guys. If that was not complicated enough, the very same people who tend to follow the herd in some aspects would turn out to be extremely individualistic in some other traits.

That was just an example. But its true for quite a lot of traits that one might be interested in looking for.

So ultimately, I find it hard to define a Typical IITian. But a lot of people apply that description to a lot of IITians.

Throw some light people!

For starters ALL IITians gawk and gape at girls.

The males do it for the obvious reasons and the non-males, also, do it for the obvious reasons ;-)

think u got to be in IIT to find out that even in IIT the typical IITians are quite less in percentage.... specially in IITB, where the number of post grads is high.. ! more over, in IITB, guess the people are quite smart compared to the nerdy image associated with typical IIT thing

Its easy to define a typical IITian... He is a chained, desperate and yet egoistic creature whose whole sense of achievement is driven by doing the things other people expect him to do. But isnt that applicable to the whole human race which is living in an illusion. Well, in my opinion, a typical IITian is as likeable and as loathsome as a typical human...

I'm not an IITian, but I visited IIT Kanpur for their Techfest, Techkriti, in February, which gave me an opportunity to observe this species, and thank my lucky stars I made up my mind not to do engineering. (me lowly 12th standard student, from DPS RKP)

Back to the point, in IIT K, there seemed to be two kinds of IITians, the majority seemed to be from Kota, and couldn't string together a decent sentence, and generally seemed to have no life. The other half were a bunch of people who didn't seem to know why they were stuck in IIT, and really resented the Kota guys.

Mebbe its different in other IIT's, or mebbe I didn't see enough.

My two cents.

much before the recent books on iitians...rukmani bhaiya nair...an oxfian and now humanities teacher at iitd..wrote a book 'technobrat' where she tries to define this typical iitian. She used a very fancy word 'wakshatrias' or sumthing like that by mixing words from some fancy laguages such as greek and sanskrit!!

The entire book is an attempt to understand and define iitian...based on her interactions with students while teaching at iitd. The book was too heavy for me...too much of philosophical jargon..though i read it 3 years back so 'banyan tree' syndrome might be working....

you may consider reading that book

it also has a funny(sick?) essay from mister ross, ashish rastogi!

General impression about iitians is that they are female starved (read sex starved for some) men, some of them who are under the wrong impression that they are the only brains around...tch tch. But on a serious note, they are technically awesome and have their fundas right :-)

Bhavya's analysis is pretty accurate. It's unfortunate though that he decided against engineering after seeing IITians. Btw, I am from Kota too, and I can string more than a sentence and pretty decently too. And do the non-Kota guys really resent us? I never noticed.
On a more non-personal and serious note, I have been having an on-and-off discussion with a Living Media journalist for some time on a similar issue. There are a few things that IITians do have in common but that would probably sound cliched. But I don't think there's anything typically IITian. We do share this subconscious feeling of being slightly (if not more) superior to students from 'lesser' colleges, but that is not in a negative manner. It's only a sense of accomplishment and confidence that comes from having cracked JEE and the way we are feted in our family and society. But since that's been eliminated as an option here, I don't think there's anything common to all of us, at least nothing that qualifies as typically IITian...no, not even the bandi walah funda.

Hey Gump.. thanks for the idea about the book. I'll try getting my hands on it.

So, we have had 7 comments on this post. And yet, the Typical IITian still eludes me.

Being sex starved.. interesting idea.. but badly phrased. Its not as if engineers from other colleges are organizing orgies all the time. As far as I know, they dont get any either. Ditto for most people from most colleges (Arts, Commerce.. whatever).

What is true indeed (and perhaps this was the intended idea) is that a Typical IITians does not get much female company. I am sure this does play a role in shaping his (IITs are predominantly male) psyche and personality.

But then again.. there are books like "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" written by non-IITians for a non-IITian audience. So, not understanding the opposite sex seems to be a global phenomena too.

All in all, this has just been another brick in the wall. And there is no Typical IITian. Just a lot of IITians. Thats it.

typical iitian --- the term most inquired, wondered nad mussed abt is still an enigmatic character to me .
everyone ,i feel has a unique identity . IIT is just like any other high profile institute where ppl spurred by different motives land up to make a different person out of themselves.so chillax all non iitians for not every iitian is successful and every successful person is not iitian. success by usual world standards
